The Tea Ceremony Manual is a complete guide to Tom Sachs' culture of tea, featuring step-by-step instructions on how to perform a tea ceremony. Inspired by niche manuals such as The Tea Ceremony, by Sen'o Tanaka, The Fundamentals of Judo, by Yves Klein, and Tage Frid Teaches Woodworking, by Tage Frid, the book features a statement by the artist, an essay and haiku by Noguchi Museum Senior Curator Dakin Hart, a forward by Noguchi Museum Director Jenny Dixon, and substantial back-matter, including a visual index of all of the Tea-related works and an array of contextualizing appendices.
Following the exhibition's presentation at The Noguchi Museum, it will travel to Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, in expanded form as Tom Sachs: Space Program 3.0: Europa (September 16, 2016 to January 15, 2017), and to the Nasher Sculpture Center as Tom Sachs: Tea Ceremony (September 9, 2017 to January 7, 2018).
Published in 2016 by Tom Sachs Studio and The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum with support from Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the Nasher Sculpture Center.
Published on the occasion of the exhibition Tom Sachs: Tea Ceremony on view at the Noguchi Museum from March 23 to July 24, 2016.
